Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine

Osteopathic manipulative treatment, or OMT, is hands-on health care using just the hands to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness or injury.

Using OMT, your osteopathic physician (DO) will move your muscles and joints using techniques including stretching, gentle pressure and resistance. When appropriate, OMT can complement – and even replace – drugs or surgery. In this way, OMT brings an important dimension to standard medical care.

In 1874, Andrew Taylor Still MD, (1828-1917) understood that the human body is composed of many parts, all intimately related as a functional whole. Having none of today’s medications, not even antibiotics, Dr. Still developed techniques to restore health by restoring the ability of all of the tissues and cells of the body to function together in harmonious motion. He named this innovative approach to restoring health “osteopathy.”

I have been Dr. Childer’s patient since he opened Hands-On Healthcare and even before that, a total of 20 years. He serves as my primary care doctor and regularly adjusts my neck and back to minimize any pain and maintain flexibility. I am very pleased with the care I receive, the concern for my well being, and accessibility to him and his staff. I highly recommend Hands On Health Care.

How Osteopathic Manipulation Therapy (OMT) Works

First we have to determine that you are a candidate for OMT. During our comprehensive exam, we review your medical history, injuries, symptoms, medications, allergies, etc. We also do a careful structural exam to assess your posture, balance, spine, muscles, joints and ligaments. We may also request certain diagnostic labs or films to advise your treatment plan. With the information from our comprehensive exam, we develop a collaborative treatment plan.

Every Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment consists of two parts: a brief structural exam and the osteopathic treatment. At each therapeutic visit, Dr. Childers’ extensive training in manipulative medicine allows him to detect changes in the way your body feels; the bones, muscles, ligaments, etc. Using a variety of techniques, Dr. Childers applies specific corrective measures to relieve the areas of joint restriction and tension, improving function and allowing the area to heal.

The osteopathic “adjustment” is quite gentle, however some patients experience a “clicking” sensation or sound—usually followed by a sense of relief and well-being.

Some people think that medicine is a science, but I know that the practice is both an art and a science. Dr. Childers has been my primary doctor all my adult life because he approaches his practice with an ear to the patient. He listens. He has seen me through my darkest days, and watched me be victorious without judgment. I appreciate his approach to the patient combining the physical, mental, and emotional being.

His cranial sacral procedure helps me. Yes, I can depend on western medical thought from him as well, and I do. But, his cranial sacral procedure develops my entire physical being.  Doc Childers keeps me straight in more ways than one.

For me to brag upon Doc Childers would embarrass him. That it because he is humble and cares. Without hesitation I can recommend Doctor Edward Childers, and have done so for years for those looking for a good doctor.
